If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!I don’t know where [tag]Robert Irvine[/tag] on [tag]Food Network[/tag] came from, but his Dinner Impossible is now my favorite food show.  Part of my fascination with the show, in addition to the premise, is that Irvine doesn’t look like [...]

Potato Pancake Challenge

Posted on March 29, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

I’ve always enjoyed–and been completely incapable of making myself–[tag]potato pancakes[/tag].  Maybe it’s because I make them from my mashed potatoes, which tend to be creamier than most people’s.  Perhaps I need to make a firmer, harder mashed before trying to convert the potatoes into pancakes.
I’ve tried every trick I’ve seen on Food TV, including dredging [...]

The famed Franco-tradition, the Michelin Guide, has sent out its inspectors to start judging restaurants in Los Angeles and Las Vegas for a November 2007 publication date.

Baseball Season Means Hot Dogs

Posted on March 27, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

To me, the two All America foods are the [tag]hamburger[/tag] and [tag]hot dog[/tag].  I’ve been trying for years to concoct the perfect burger with nothing coming anywhere near close to perfect.  Hot dogs are a different story because basically there’s no way I’m going to get the ingredients, buy a sausage machine and wrap the [...]

Picking the Best Easter Ham

Posted on March 26, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | 2 Comments

With Eastern Sunday now less than two weeks away, it’s time to look at the traditional Easter meal of ham. [tag]David Rosengarten[/tag], who now runs a blog/newsletter called "Tastings," offers some sound tips, but then he goes overboard with a link to buy what he recommends as the "best ham."
Well, whatever, every blogger is entitled [...]

Okay, we all love it, and I’m married to a Chinese woman, but it turns out that you’ve got a high cholesteroal future if you munch too much [tag]Kung Pao Chicken[/tag] and other delights.
Why so?

Deep-Fried Hamburgers

Posted on March 22, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

I owe this one to ESPN radio talk show host [tag]Colin Cowherd[/tag], who yesterday reported on the existence of deep-fried [tag]White Castle hamburgers[/tag].  Now, first, if you don’t know what White Castles are, let’s leave it at this–these are the original sliders, palm-size burgers with a hole in the middle of the patty for steam [...]

No Semi in Sandra Lee–She’s Real

Posted on March 21, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

I usually hate the [tag]Food Network[/tag] series called “Chefography” because, basically, who cares that these chefs went off to Europe to study here and there for pennies and came back to open their own restaurants and become Iron Chefs and millionaires?
In the case of [tag]Sandra Lee[/tag], whom I had always figured to be some privileged [...]

Fido Follow-Up: Pet Food Recall

Posted on March 20, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

I wasn’t paying much attention to the recent [tag]pet food recall[/tag] until I began seeing stories on TV and in the newspapers of grieving pet owners who lost their buddies because of the food they ate.  Therefore, in the interest of preserving your pet, you should avoid pet foods manufactured between Dec. 3, 2006, and [...]

Your Dog and Your Diet

Posted on March 19, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

My beach bum daughter gave me a dog for Thanksgiving, figuring an old man like me needs a companion even if I am married with a wife and live-in stepdaughter.
I’m not sure what type of mongrel Buddy is, but he sure is cute.  From the beginning, however, it was clear that he wasn’t buying into [...]
